If you have done some writing, endevour to write outside your comfort zone. Try a different writing voice: write in the first person (I climbed the mountain), second person (you climbed the mountain), and third person perspectives (He climbed the mountain).
Think about the genre you want to write in.
Will you write a short story? Or perhaps start something a little longer? You may not know until you begin! The important thing to remember is that the more you write, the better you'll get.
You might want to think about the structure of your story first.
Research is one way many authors uncover the story they want to write. As they begin to better understand the subject they are investigating, a story emerges.
Another approach is to chose your favourite book, and pick a minor character from it. Now write about them in greater detail, put them in a new story, develop the character so that we get to know them really well.
Reading is just as important as writing. Read widely, read often, read outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Reading increases your vocabulary, it gives you new ideas and new directions to consider for your writing.
